Every year in France, all citizens who own a TV set are subject to a 750 Franc audiovisual tax.

In addition to subsidizing civil servants’ holidays in Guadeloupe and The Reunion, the monies collected go toward purchasing re-runs of Dallas, The Love Boat and 20-year old German detective shows, as well as to producing programmes about people and their pets and variety shows with special guest stars Johnny Halliday and probably Jane Birkin talking about the contents of her purse.

In a really rather moving effort to prove that they are not completely devoid of compassion, the French government does, nevertheless, specify that if:

1) You are over 65

And

2) Widowed

And

3) Living under the poverty line

And

4) Handicapped

You can apply for exemption.
