¶ 11 September 02

While across the sea a nation is mourning, tragedy and a shift in consciousness, we’re here feeling only relief and speechless, having come through the floods unscathed – merely two phoneless days and blackouts, a garage where the water came in one metre high swallowing memories and gear now on their way to the dump.

A stunning sight that left as quickly as it came.

(And followed by the very fine spectacle of villagers wading over in rubber boots to make sure we were safe and sound.)

Over 20 have died in neighbouring towns and 12 are still missing, swept up by the current that reached a flow of 1,800 cubic metres per second at the peak of its frenzy.

For some reason perspective keeps coming to mind.
