I smell an Emmy

¶ 28 May 03

Written and produced by a White House insider with the close co-operation of Mr. Bush and his top officials, the movie The Big Dance represents an unusually close merger of Washington’s ambitions with the Hollywood entertainment machinery.
A copy of the script obtained by The Globe and Mail reveals a prime-time drama starring a nearly infallible, heroic president with little or no dissension in his ranks and a penchant for delivering articulate, stirring, off-the-cuff addresses to colleagues.

Well, we like the use of the word “unusually” in any case, and we especially like trying to imagine our hero saying, ‘I won’t be seeking a declaration of war. With a shadowy enemy, specificity makes that problematic.’

Shadowy, indeed.

But, hush, I’m sure it will be an honest portrayal of a compassionate leader, a fine human being and a close, personal friend of mine.

Mr. Chetwynd said that he did not write such scenes principally to bolster the image of Mr. Bush, but that the image was a concern.

I’d like to see Philip Seymour Hoffman as Karl Rove, maybe Mickey Rourke as Richard Perle, Christopher Walken as Rummy… and Sean Penn in his role from I am Sam, as the Beaver.

  2. It gets oh so very much better than that.

They got Timothy Bottoms to play the Fearless Leader.

Mr. Bottoms, you may or may not recall, is, funnily enough, garnering a reputation for his portrayals of Bush fils. After all, his last big television vehicle was That’s My Bush!

  3. That’s My Bush!

Broadcast here on France’s Canal+ with this deftly-translated title: Bush: Président!
